Paedophiles [sic] and violent criminals apply to work as teachers in Coventry

"The figures, broken down by year and postcode, show that 13 convicted shoplifters applied to teach in Stratford in 2010. In the same year 12 drug dealers applied to teach in Southam - a town with a population of just 6,500.

In the north of Coventry in 2009 three benefits cheats applied to teach and in the south of the city last year one applicant had been charged with people smuggling.

The responsibility on carrying out checks and deciding who works at a school rests with a headteacher.

Having a criminal record doesn’t automatically prevent someone from joining the teaching profession but offences will always show up on an enhanced check.

As well as CRB checks employers will also check whether an applicant is on a list of people banned from working with children, formerly known as List 99. References from previous employers are obtained."
