Townshend tells of child porn probe

"Rock legend Pete Townshend has described his decision to investigate the roots of child pornography as "insane".

The Who guitarist and songwriter was cautioned and put on the sex offenders' register for five years in 2003 for looking at child porn on the internet.

The star insisted he was looking at the website only while conducting "research" for a campaign against internet porn involving children.

He gave more information about that in an interview with The Times, which is serialising his memoir, Who I Am.

He described what he had done as a product of "white knight syndrome, an attempt to be seen to be the one that's helping"."

Pete Townshend says court 'would have destroyed me'

""What I did was wrong and stupid," he added. "My culpability is clear... but my innocence is absolute."

Townshend has continued to maintain his innocence. "There was no evidence except from the mea culpa of the credit card," he told the BBC. "So, I was charged, cautioned and put on the sex offenders register as a signal. [oh Pete, step away from the hole, and put down the spade]"

We have no animosity towards you, Pete, we saw your obvious distress, in the videos.

You could have done more, been a real 'White Knight', but you chose not to.

We understand why you did not.
